1996 Ford Mustang Cobra Convertible 5-Speed
This 1996 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Convertible is powered by the 4.6-liter DOHC "Cobra" V8, rated at 305 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. It has been extensively and thoughtfully modified: a BBK catalytic converter X-pipe with a Flowmaster American Thunder exhaust, Maximum Motorsports full-length subframe connectors, Sport series lower control arms, adjustable upper control arms, a Ford Racing/Eibach progressive-rate lowering spring kit, KYB and Gabriel shocks, and Moog lower ball joints front and rear. It rides on SVE Cobra R replica wheels in 17x9 with hub-centric wheel spacers, wrapped in General G-MAX RS tires, paired with braided stainless steel brake lines and a PowerStop brake upgrade kit. Steering has been upgraded with a Maximum Motorsports solid steering shaft assembly, and the car shifts through a Hurst short-throw shifter. The interior carries a Maximum Motorsports 4-point bolt-in roll bar, Procar by Scat seats, and an aftermarket JVC Bluetooth head unit. The current owner purchased the car in 2024 with roughly 83,000 miles on it; the odometer now shows 86,352 miles. Carfax documents nine previous owners, with the original owner holding the car for nearly 27 years before it began changing hands more frequently in recent years; no accidents or damage are reported across any ownership period. In March 2025, the car received a substantial service at Expert Auto Center (Wichita, KS), installing several of the modifications above along with a new steering shaft, polyurethane bushings throughout the suspension and drivetrain, and an alignment correction. Paint fade is present on several panels, and there are a few chips in the paint that are pictured. A new ball joint was also installed in 2024. Included in the sale are the original wheels, seats, and other misc. parts. The car is for sale on dealer consignment.

VEHICLE DETAILS
OVERVIEW
The SVT Cobra was built by Ford's Special Vehicle Team, an in-house performance division established in 1991 that also produced the SVT Lightning and the Ford GT before merging into Ford Performance in 2015; across its Mustang generations from 1993 to 2004, the SVT Cobra saw roughly 80,000 units produced. The 1996 model year introduced the 4.6-liter DOHC "Cobra" V8 to the lineup, replacing the previous 5.0-liter pushrod engine, and paired it exclusively with the Borg-Warner T-45 5-speed manual; no automatic was offered on the Cobra that generation. 1996 was also the only year Ford offered the "Mystic Cobra," a 2,000-unit special edition with a color-shifting Chrom-a-lusion paint finish. The SVT Cobra Mustang Club remains active today, supporting Cobra, Shelby, and modular Boss 302 owners with technical knowledge, track events, and car shows. Well-documented, professionally modified Cobras like this one, where the work is itemized and partly backed by shop invoices rather than left to guesswork, tend to hold collector interest better than unknown or undocumented builds, since buyers can verify exactly what was done rather than relying on a seller's word alone.
EXTERIOR
The car is finished in red with dual white racing stripes. It carries a Maximum Motorsports roll bar visible behind the seats, along with a "COBRA" windshield banner. It rides on SVE Cobra R replica wheels, 17x9, finished in silver, fitted with General G-MAX RS tires and hub-centric 1-inch wheel spacers. Orange-painted brake calipers are visible behind the wheels, paired with a PowerStop brake upgrade kit. The front fender carries a "COBRA" badge. The paint shows fading from sun exposure on different sections of the car, as well as a few chips in the paint that are pictured.
INTERIOR
The cabin is trimmed in black and tan, with Procar by Scat seats replacing the factory units. A Maximum Motorsports 4-point roll bar with a Race-Quip 5-point harness is installed. The shifter has been upgraded to a Hurst with a white shift knob. An aftermarket JVC Bluetooth-capable head unit is installed in the center stack, supporting Pandora, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and SiriusXM, in place of the factory radio. A 1998-sourced center console assembly has been installed in place of the original 1996 unit. The steering wheel carries a "COBRA" badge at its center. Power windows and AC are also fitted.
MECHANICAL
The car is powered by the 4.6-liter DOHC "Cobra" V8, rated at 305 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, paired with a Borg-Warner T-45 5-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. Suspension and chassis modifications include Maximum Motorsports full-length subframe connectors, Sport series lower control arms and adjustable upper control arms, a Ford Racing/Eibach progressive-rate lowering spring kit, KYB front struts and Gabriel rear quad shocks, Moog lower ball joints, and Prothane rack, sway bar, and end-link bushings. The exhaust has been upgraded with a BBK catalytic converter X-pipe and a Flowmaster American Thunder system. Ignition components have been refreshed with MSD coil packs, MSD plug wires, and Accel spark plugs. In March 2025, Expert Auto Center installed a Maximum Motorsports solid steering shaft assembly with needle-bearing U-joints, performed a full round of polyurethane bushing replacement (transmission mount, end links, rack and pinion, control arms), replaced the rear shock absorbers, flushed the power steering fluid, changed the oil and filter, and corrected a left-pulling alignment condition. A new ball joint was also installed in 2024. Carfax additionally documents a rear brake caliper replacement in October 2013, and an A/C compressor replacement with recharge, alignment, and tie rod end replacement in August 2021.
