The Shelby Lancer was a limited-production hatchback sports sedan built on the Dodge Lancer's H-body platform, modified by Shelby Automobiles in Whittier, California, and offered only for the 1987 model year in this Shelby-built form, before Chrysler took over production in-house for 1988-89 under the Dodge Lancer Shelby name. Only 800 examples of the 1987 Shelby-built car were produced: 400 with a 3-speed automatic transmission and leather interior, and 400 with a 5-speed manual transmission and cloth interior. This car's window sticker confirms the TorqueFlite automatic and leather bucket seats, placing it among the 400 automatic-equipped examples from that split. The Shelby Lancer was intended as an American counterpart to European sport sedans like the BMW 3 Series and Peugeot 405, and included equipment not offered on the standard Lancer, including a 10-speaker Pioneer CD audio system, one of the first CD systems offered in an American car. Genuine Shelby-specific parts included the 15-inch wheels, steering wheel, valve cover, and a numbered dashboard plaque unique to each car.

The 1987 Shelby Lancer used Monroe Formula GP struts, larger sway bars, and a 4-wheel disc brake system, unusual for the segment at the time.
