1954 Facel Ford Comète Monte Carlo

The Comète was Facel Métallon's first complete automobile. Jean Daninos's coachbuilding company built it on the French Ford Vedette chassis before the company became Facel Vega and gained international recognition with the HK500. Fewer than 350 Comètes were produced across all variants in the early 1950s, with the Monte Carlo representing the sport-trim specification; surviving examples appear rarely in any condition. The design was recognized in 1953 when the Museum of Modern Art in New York included the Comète in its "Ten Automobiles" exhibition, curated by Arthur Drexler, in which ten cars were selected and presented as works of art, one of the earliest acknowledgments of the automobile as a serious design object. The Comète sits at the direct origin of the Facel Vega story: the car that proved Daninos could build a complete automobile before he went on to produce some of the most significant French GTs of the postwar era. Because so few Comètes survive in any condition and fewer still appear at public auction, established price comparables are scarce; the market is driven almost entirely by private sale among specialist collectors. The HK500 and Facellia, better-documented siblings, regularly attract six-figure results at major auction houses; the Comète's greater rarity and MoMA provenance place it in a distinct category where condition and documentation carry outsized weight.
